Why Stress is So Damaging and How our Mind Plays a KEY Role
Stress is a natural survival response, but when it becomes chronic, it impacts our life in mind, body, and spiritual well-being. Ongoing pressure from work, relationships, money, global events, keeps the nervous system on high alert. This in turn leads to an elevated stress-response, whereby we are taken out of our Window of Tolerance (WOT) with the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) being overactivated. These are often over-activated thoughts in our Minds that activate parts of our brain to send neurobiochemistry throughout the body in alignment with the SNS response. This can manifest as poor sleep, digestive issues, feeling "short-fused", numb or agitated, and over time case disease in the body.
In most cases this stress-response is not caused by an external situation/catalyst—it’s the mind’s interpretation that creates the stress response and suffering. The mind loops on the past or worries about the future, triggering a stress response even when no real danger exists. This also reduces the amount of information from the "present moment" to go into long-term storage for memories, leaving us living most of our days in the past or future and missing out on the present moment.
The good news? You can retrain your nervous system by cross-training in areas of daily mindfulness and meditation.
When you learn to focus the mind on the present moment, the parasympathetic response takes over to rest, digest, and heal in areas of mind, body, and spirit.
