3. What is Reiki & How Does
it Work?
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese Words, “Rei” and “ki”. Rei means
“universal” or “cosmic” and “ki” refers to the life force energy that flows
through all matter. Because Reiki is universal, it is the energy of life and
creation, and therefore, can do no harm. Reiki can only be used for good and
will go wherever it is needed. As a creative force, Reiki is highly intelligent.
Reiki can be applied in person by laying on of hands, or can be sent over a
distance (in level II). It helps the practitioner develop their intuition, and
understand themselves and others. Reiki can heal on the physical, mental,
emotional, spiritual, and soul levels. And not only does Reiki heal the client,
Reiki heals the practitioner.
When the Reiki Channel (Practitioner) lays their hands on a client, the client
subconsciously draws Reiki through the Channel (Practitioner) and into
themselves. The Reiki flows from the universe through the Channel and into the
client, which means that the Channel is not using their own energy, so does not
feel depleted after a session.
Mrs. Takata's Explanation:
[The following excerpt is taken from the
early diary of Mrs. Hawayo Takata, the first American to become a Reiki Master
(1938, Honolulu, Hawaii).]
“I believe there exists One Supreme Being – the Absolute Infinite – a Dynamic
Force that governs the world and universe. … This power is unfathomable,
immeasurable, and …incomprehensible to man. Yet, every single living being is
receiving its blessings daily, awake or asleep.
…I shall call it “Reiki” because I studied under that expression. Reiki is a
radionic wave like radio. It could be applied locally or as in short wave. A
distant treatment could be successfully given.
Reiki is not electricity, nor radium or X-ray. It could penetrate thin layers of
silk, linen, porcelain or lead, wood or steel, because it comes from the Great
Spirit, the Infinite.
…Because it is a universal wave, everything that has life benefits when treated
– plant life, fowls, the animals, as well as human beings, infants or old, poor
or rich.
It should be applied and used daily as a prevention. God gave us this body… We
were put into this world for some purpose, therefore, we should have health and
happiness.
It was God’s plan so he provides us with everything. He gave us hands to use
them to apply and heal, to retain physical health and mental balance, to free
ourselves from ignorance, and live in an enlightened world, to live in harmony
with yourself and others, to love all beings.
…With the first contact or initiation, the hands radiate vibrations when applied
to the ailing part. It relieves pain, stops the blood from an open wound; your
hands are ready to heal acute and chronic diseases….
In acute cases, only a few minutes’ application is necessary. In chronic cases,
the first step is to find the cause and effect. …As soon as the body responds to
the treatment, the acute ailment disappears but the cause remains. Dig into the
cause daily and with each treatment, improvement is seen.”

4. Your Body's
Energy
Chakras
are the energy centers in one's body. Each chakra has a specific location
(though all are located in the center of the body), color, and meaning. When a
chakra is blocked or out of balance, the issues relating to that energy center
are often the cause of that blockage.
Root Chakra
The first chakra is located at the base of the spine. It vibrates to the color
red, and refers to issues of security.
Sacral (Naval) Chakra
The second chakra is located approximately 2-3 finger-widths below one's naval.
It vibrates to the color orange, and refers to issues with relationships and
sexuality.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The third chakra is located between the lowest rib and the naval. It vibrates to
the color yellow and refers to issues of personal power, strength, and money.

Heart Chakra
The fourth chakra is located at the heart (between the breasts). It vibrates to
the color green (or rose) and refers to emotional issues.
Throat Chakra
The fifth chakra is located at the throat. It vibrates to the color blue and
refers to issues of communication and self-expression.
Third Eye Chakra
The sixth chakra is located in the center of the forehead. It vibrates to the
color indigo (the color of dark denim, or a clear midnight sky) and refers to
issues of intuition and inner knowing.
Crown Chakra
The seventh chakra is located at the top and back of the head. It vibrates to
the color violet and relates to issues of spirituality and divine connection.
